Across the central and eastern Tropical Atlantic, sea surface temperatures are below average. The exception is right along the west coast of Africa where ocean water temperatures are above average. One of the keys in determining how active/inactive the hurricane season will be is how much will the deep tropics (south of 25 North Latitude) warms.   The Gulf of Mexico is considered a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean. The gulf was considered part of the Atlantic Ocean until the s, when it was named the Seno Mexicano by Spain.

Bertha was also the longest-lived July named storm on record. It lasted 17 days in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Also in July , Category 2 . The waterway is miles long and stretches from the Atlantic Ocean near Stuart, Florida to the Gulf of Mexico at Fort Myers. It is the only true cross Florida canal and river system that joins the east coast of Florida to the west coast.

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is a year independent research program established to study the effect, and the potential associated impact, of hydrocarbon releases on the environment and public health, as well as to develop improved spill mitigation, oil detection, characterization and remediation technologies.   And in the early s, the section of the Gulf of Mexico where the ships went down was a turbulent region that pirates, privateers and government-sanctioned ships all called home.

Department of Geology.; Louisiana Geological Survey.;]. The formation of the Gulf of Mexico, an oceanic rift basin located between North America and the Yucatan Block, was preceded by the breakup of the Supercontinent Pangaea in the Late-Triassic, weakening the g between the North and South American plates continued in the Early-Jurassic, approximately million years ago, and formation of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Gulf of Mexico is a large ocean basin near the Southeastern United is a part of the Atlantic Ocean and is bounded by Mexico to the southwest, Cuba to the southeast, and the Gulf Coast of the United States on the north, which includes the states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas ().The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world at a width.

Gulf of Mexico, Spanish Golfo de México, partially landlocked body of water on the southeastern periphery of the North American continent. It is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Straits of Florida, running between the peninsula of Florida and the island of Cuba, and to the Caribbean Sea by the Yucatán Channel, which runs between the Yucatán Peninsula and Cuba.

The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between Europe and Africa to the east, and the Americas to the west. As one component of the interconnected World Ocean, it is connected in the north to the Arctic Ocean, to the Pacific Ocean in the southwest, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, and the Southern Ocean in the south (other definitions describe the.

The overall kinematic history of the Central Atlantic Ocean between 10° N and 40° N is well understood (Klitgord and Schouten, ; Muller and Roest, ; Muller and Smith, ; Muller et al., ; Vogt, ; Withjack et al., ).Following Middle to Late Triassic rifting between North America and Africa, seafloor spreading began at ca.

Ma (Withjack et al., ). In contrast to the South Atlantic, the North Atlantic is rich in islands, in the variety of its coastline, and in tributary seas. The latter include the Caribbean Sea, the Gulfs of Mexico and St. Lawrence, and Hudson and Baffin bays on the west and the Baltic, North, Mediterranean, and Black seas on the east.

The earliest phase of the Seaway began in the mid-Cretaceous when an arm of the Arctic Ocean transgressed south over western North America; this formed the Mowry Sea, so named for the Mowry Shale, an organic-rich rock formation. In the south, the Gulf of Mexico was originally an extension of the Tethys Late-Cretaceous times, Eurasia and the Americas had separated along the south.

As rifting progressed, Mexico separated from South America, and the eastern border of North America broke away from the Moroccoan bulge of Africa.

Oceanic basalts were added to the seafloor of the newly formed and gradually widening Atlantic Ocean. throughout Triassic time, Laurisia North.

Sadly this book on THE GULF only covers the American Gulf coast. Much the GULF extends into Mexico, Central America & South America. or is my geography over s: Rifting began in the Middle or early Late Triassic (e.g. Wade et al. ;Olsen ), propagating from south to north, and terminating along the Nova Scotia margin in the Early Jurassic, as early.

Mexico A country of south-central North America. Southern Mexico was the site of various advanced civilizations beginning with the Olmec and including the Mexicó - definition of Mexicó by The Free Dictionary on the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific: early Mexican history includes the Maya, Toltec, and Aztec civilizations; conquered by the.

The Atlantic hurricane season was fairly active with several notable ane Edith, the strongest of the season, was a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the highest category on the struck Nicaragua at peak intensity, killing dozens, and later hit southern Louisiana.

UntilHurricane Ginger held the record for the longest known duration of a North Atlantic. In Aprilthe ocean exploration vessel NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer will conduct an approximately three-week expedition to two areas in the Gulf of Mexico: the north-central part of the basin, along and north of a steep slope/geologic feature known as the Sigsbee Escarpment, and the central part of the West Florida Escarpment.

The Gulf of Mexico, the ninth largest body of water in the. The basic structural and stratigraphic framework of the Gulf of Mexico Basin was established during the Late Triassic and the Jurassic. During the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic, as the North American plate started to separate from the South American and African plates, the area of the future basin was part of an extensive landmass broken by tensional grabens that were filled by red beds and.

The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) originated as a small ocean basin created by seafloor spreading in the Middle Jurassic through Early Cretaceous.

By the end of the Mesozoic, mixed carbonate and clastic sedimentation had constructed a northern basin margin characterized by a broad coastal plain and shelf fronted by a well-defined shelf edge and continental slope (Galloway, ). The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean bordered by five states of the United States on the northern and the eastern border, five Mexican states on its western and southern border, and Cuba to the southeast (Fig.

).The GOM is ninth, fifth, and ninth among oceans and semienclosed seas in terms of its area (1, km 2), average depth ( m), and volume. The Gulf Stream is a particularly strong current that carries warm water north from the Gulf of Mexico up the eastern coast of the United States and across the Atlantic to Western Europe.

The Gulf Stream moves times more water than all the rivers on Earth combined and flows times faster than the Amazon – the world’s largest river. The Florida Ocean Face-Off Atlantic Coast.

The waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the East Coast of Florida are, in general, known to have more wave action than the Gulf Coast.

It means more opportunities for surfing (Kelly Slater grew up surfing this coast) and general water play for those looking for a vacation that includes a more active beach.Gulf Coast, geographic area in the extreme southern United States along the northern portion of the Gulf of hing in a large, flattened U shape for more than 1, miles (1, km), it extends about miles ( km) inland and runs north-northwest along western Florida; west along southern Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana; and southwest and south along southeastern Texas.the known geologic history of surrounding provinces: Florida, Bahamas, Cuba, Yucatan, and the North At-lantic.

Finally, we discuss the implication of seismic sur-veys and drilling for tectonic models of the early open-ing of the Gulf of Mexico and the collision of the Cu-ban arc with the North American Plate. SEISMIC STRATIGRAPHIC FRAMEWORK.
